Thursday 19th April 2012 - TITANIC THEATRE AT THE CLUB

Format

Arrive from 7pm

Theatre in the Old Billiard Room at 7.30pm sharp

Supper served at 9pm

Following 2011’s sold out, inaugural play, the House, Sports & Social Committee are pleased to announce another evening of live theatre, this year to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic.

The disaster that was the sinking of the Titanic occurred on the night of April 14/15 1912. It was not only the worst maritime accident in history with the loss of over fifteen hundred people but it also heralded the end of an era.

A small group of local people (including one of our members – Dick Mackenzie) has formed a company limited by guarantee to commission (with the support of the Arts Council) a number of new works for a festival of creative arts in the week leading up to the 100th anniversary of the loss of the Titanic.

This Festival seeks to reflect the creative energy that drove the people of Belfast in the first decade of the twentieth century in industrial terms and which now continues to permeate the arts in this small part of the world.

The Festival will comprise a play about emigration in the Lyric Theatre; a specially commissioned song cycle to be performed in the Public Record Office in Titanic Quarter; an art exhibition in the Golden Thread Theatre; a new “Requiem for the lost souls of the Titanic” in St. Anne’s Cathedral by local composer – Philip Hammond; and a one man play to be performed in the Barge beside the Waterfront Hall.

This newly commissioned one-man play will be from the pen of one of the leading Titanic experts, James Wilson Foster, formerly Professor of English in the University of British Columbia, who has in retirement moved back to his native Northern Ireland.

This play will be his first essay on stage and will be based on the last hour of Thomas Andrews, the designer of Titanic and a member of the Ulster Reform Club who was lost in the tragedy. His memorial is on the wall of the third level landing of the Club. The play will be staged by Kabosh the Belfast-based, multi-award winning theatre company.

Thursday 15th March 2012 - Titanic Cinema Night & Supper

Dress: Smart Casual

£30 Per person, including films & supper

Mr Mike Catto, Ireland’s leading film critic, will examine how the story of the most famous ship ever built has fascinated film makers around the world for almost a century, starting with some of the remaining images from "Saved from the Titanic", made only weeks after the Belfast-built liner sank in the North Atlantic on Sunday April 14th 1912.

Blending rare archival footage of interpretations of the Titanic story from the German film "Nacht und Eis" made in 1912 to James Cameron’s 1997 Hollywood blockbuster, Mr Catto traces how cinema’s insatiable appetite for that fateful night has continued unabated.

There have been many different "takes" on the sinking including the 1919 fictional love story entitled "Atlantis", the incredibly named "Sex", made in 1920 by the silent Ben-Hur director Fred Niblo, which tells the story of flapper girls on board a ship called Gigantic, and the 1929 British-made "Atlantic" which changed the ship’s name to avoid litigation!

Mr Catto has obtained unique footage of the Nazi Germany version made in 1943, designed as a propaganda coup with steerage passengers portrayed as poor German and Irish victims persecuted by callous British officers under instruction from rich Jewish First Class voyagers, and he has extracts from lesser-known versions like "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" from 1964, "SOS Titanic" of 1980, the 1996 Canadian-made "Titanic" with George C. Scott and a young Catherine Zeta Jones, the French/Italian/Spanish co-production "La Camarera del Titanic", and many more.

Add the best-known interpretations- Jan Negulesco’s 1953 "Titanic" starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck, Roy Ward Baker’s "A NIght to Remember" of 1958 with Kenneth More, and Cameron’s most recent version due for re-release in 2012- and you are guaranteed a night to remember at the Ulster Reform Club.

Eric Cairns, a career estate agent started in Brian Morton & Co in the mid 1960s. Rising through the ranks he became the principal partner in 1973.  The business thrived with a very energetic partnership and staff, becoming the fifth largest estate agency in the United Kingdom with over 350 staff operating out of 26 offices province-wide.
The company was targeted and bought by the then Halifax Building Society in 1986 after which Eric was invited to join the main  Halifax Property Services Board and was appointed Chief Executive for Northern  Ireland and Scotland.

Having served with Halifax Property Services for four years he founded the “Eric Cairns Partnership” in 1992.   Identifying a major gap in the local market the company focused on “high end” properties and was instrumental in raising prices to new levels.
By 2008 the Partnership was employing 76 staff working out of two ‘State of the Art’ offices in Holywood and the Lisburn Road, Belfast. The company was acquired by
BTW Shields in 2008/9.

Recognising the potential of the Internet, Eric was also pivotal in driving “Property News” to a preeminent position as the main property web site in Northern Ireland. “Property News” has since been acquired by Independent News & Media.

After a short period as consultant with BTW Eric retired to concentrate on his private interests.
A few of Eric’s many other positions in business and charities have been:

Format-Members and guests sit down to hear our Guest Speaker Dr Adamson at noon followed at approximately 12.50pm, by lunch.

The Belfast Blitz, Easter  1941

2011 marks the Seventieth Anniversary of the bombing of Belfast by the German Luftwaffe. Belfast was a prime target with the shipyard at Harland and Wolff building many vessels for the Royal Navy, Short Brothers constructing the Sunderland flying boat and Mackie’s machining the Bofors anti-aircraft shells. Other companies and linen mills also made an important contribution to the Allied war effort in aircraft parts, glider frames, gun mountings and ammunition. In short, with an enviable tradition particularly in engineering and textiles Belfast clearly was a suitable bombing target for the German Air Force.

Our invited guest speaker is Dr. Ian Adamson OBE a former Lord Mayor of Belfast (1996-1997), Assembly Member and continues today to be a member of Belfast City Council. Dr. Adamson has specialized in pediatric medicine and is presently physician and Special Advisor on History and Culture to Rev Ian Paisley (now Lord Bannside).

Dr. Adamson has written several books on Ulster history and has particular interest in the Battle of the Somme of which he is the Founding Chairman and matters relating to our Ulster-Scots heritage. He has recently written the Forward, in conjunction with the Belfast Telegraph, for the book, “Bombs over Belfast, The Blitz 1941”. Dr. Adamson is also a fellow member of the Ulster Reform Club.

Despite being informed by imperial defence experts that Belfast was to be a certain Luftwaffe target Belfast was totally unprepared for the forthcoming horror. There were inadequate public shelters, some barrage balloons and not enough anti-aircraft batteries to protect a densely packed population. Unlike other British cities there had been no organized plan to evacuate children, numbering almost 100,000 remaining in Belfast.

Dr. Adamson will give a background prior to the Blitz, the lack of government preparation and the subsequent human and industrial cost. In the aftermath, he will discuss the southern reaction from Dublin and that of Eamon de Valera, the Irish Prime Minister. The German response and that of Joseph Goebbles, Minister of Propaganda will also be interpreted.

Format Reception drink, 6-course dinner, wine with meal, auction and ballot all hosted by Mr Jim Neilly

Fergus Slattery

Regarded as one of world rugby’s greatest back-row forwards, Fergus made his international debut, aged 20, in Ireland’s drawn game against South Africa in 1970, going on to win 61 Irish caps, 17 as captain, in a career that spanned 14 seasons. A former pupil of Blackrock College, and a graduate of UCD, he captained Ireland to a test series victory in Australia in 1979, the first time that feat had been achieved by any of the Northern Hemisphere countries, and was captain again two years later when Ireland lost both tests in South Africa by narrow margins.

A member of the outstanding Lions squad to New Zealand in 1971, injury prevented him from playing in the test side but three years later in South Africa, he was a key member of the Lions side that won the test series, going through the entire tour unbeaten. Although approached about his availability for subsequent Lions tours, Slattery declined, concentrating on playing for Blackrock, Leinster and Ireland whom he helped to a Triple Crown in 1982 and a Five Nations Championship in 1983. Inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007, he is in great demand as an after-dinner speaker, combining his outstanding anecdotal wit with his skills as a professional auctioneer in supporting major charities in Ireland and beyond.

Today the extensive subterranean tunnels used to bring water from the Mendoza river to operate the water-mill are now used as dark cellars where wine reposes, achieving its optimum maturation.

In 1984, Luigi Bosca`s wines entered the international market. The Arizu family aims to keeps its traditional values of quality and prestige that have been cultivated over the last 100 years. They add new elements of innovation and technology to offer the best wines of Argentina. They have a number of vineyards in prime bits of Mendoza. Thursday 22nd September 2011 - CELTIC FRINGE FOOD FESTIVAL- HOSTED BY CHEF NICK PRICE, CHAIR OF TASTE OF ULSTER-POSTPONED UNTIL EARLY 2012

The Club is planning a unique series of dining experiences for its Members and their guests over the next few years. Put behind you previous notions of gourmet evenings, fine dining events, taster menus et cetera! At the suggestion of the House, Sports & Social Committee, and under the banner of A Celtic Fringe Food Festival, the Club is to host a number of unique dinners that will celebrate the best of local produce. To accompany the bills of fare, we will also have entertainment and informed narrative to enhance the overall experience. The ambience will be entirely focused on quality and style.

The inaugural event is scheduled for Thursday 22nd September with the emphasis firmly on the best that Northern Ireland can produce.  Northern Ireland producers are now sending high class produce around the globe, such is the reputation of their distinctive brands. Long gone are the Saturday nights of Egg Mayonnaise, Chicken Maryland and Sherry Trifle washed down with a carafe of Blue Nun! [Apologies, at this stage, to those Members from Ballyclare who are reading this in a confused state of mind!]  In the months ahead, we are planning similar events with the emphasis moving to other Nations that make up this wonderful diverse area, each with their own unique and original fare.

Hosted by Chef Nick Price, Chair of Taste of Ulster, who will guide us through the several courses and the rationale of the menu, we are looking forward to a memorable evening of gastronomic and epicurean delights. Head Chef Tom McCluney and his team are already excited about preparing a menu that will embrace regional game, king scallops, pork belly, artisan soup, Ulster lamb, Bramley apples, indigent cheeses, Wines with a local connection will also be able to be purchased on the evening.

And if that weren’t enough ... there will be music and the spoken word to complement the good things on the plates and in our glasses. Others have talked about a Feast for the Senses, but we’re aiming to set new standards in what we believe is the finest Dining Room in Belfast City Centre.

Please plan to bring your friends to support the inaugural event in this exciting new venture. Tickets will be allocated strictly on a first come - first served basis.

Northern Ireland’s most successful athlete,

Mary Peters, is the province’s greatest ambassador. She competed in five Commonwealth Games from 1958 to 1974, winning gold medals in the pentathlon and the shot in 1970 and in the pentathlon in 1974. Her finest hour came in 1972 when, in her third Olympic Games, she won the pentathlon gold medal in Munich, setting a new world record for the event with a personal best in the 200 metres, her final discipline. The BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 1972, Mary, following her retirement as a competitor, became manager of the British Women’s Athletics team and President of the British Athletics Federation. Her success prompted the development of the Mary Peters Track in Belfast, and she was awarded the MBE in 1973, the CBE in 1990 and in 2000 became a Dame Commander of the British Empire. Awarded Honorary Doctorates by Queen’s University, Loughborough University and the University of Ulster, Mary is the driving force behind the Mary Peters Trust which provides invaluable financial assistance to young athletes, and, in 2009, she was appointed to the position of Lord Lieutenant of Belfast.

happenstance theatre company’s

The Boat Factory

with Dan Gordon and Michael Condron

The Boat Factory (All the Queen’s Men) is a new play written by award-winning local actor and presenter Dan Gordon, and based on his personal experience of growing up around the east Belfast shipyard. This unique and innovative project aims to tell stories which reflect our lives and engender a sense of pride in our shipbuilding heritage, and to perform these stories at the very heart of the community - in schools, clubs, community centres, parochial halls, and prisons – in Belfast and Northern Ireland.

2nd of July 1945: World War II is in its final throes and the Cold War is about to begin; Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly star in ‘Anchors Aweigh’ and in Belfast’s Harland and Wolff Titanic Shipyard, preparations are made for a post-war world. Regarded as the biggest and best there is, there’s a power station, docks, machine shops, engine works and saw mills. If you can dream it – they can build it! Painters, plumbers, riveters, joiners, coppersmiths, fitters, burners, electricians, riggers and shipwrights: there were sixty seven different trades and nearly 200 acres of land; 1700 ships built between here and the Clyde and 35,000 men employed at its height.

This is their story.

As an actor Dan Gordon is probably best known for his portrayal of loveable??? Psychopath – Red Hand Luke in 10 series of the BBC NI television programme Give My Head Peace. In Theatre his performance in the one man show A Night in November by Marie Jones was a major contribution to the Irish stage. He has a long Theatrical career and has garnered many plaudits, awards and nominations along the way, including – TMA – Irish Times – Belfast Telegraph EMA – Glasgow Herald Paper Boat and Broadway Outer Critics Circle Award.

Michael Condron was born in Toronto and now lives in Belfast. Some previous Theatre credits include: John Bull’s Other Island, Santa Claus...What The Reindeer Saw, Much Ado About nothing, Charlotte’s Web, Xmas Eve Can Kill You (all at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast.

Friday 25th February 2011 - THE PRESIDENT’S DINNER

THE PRESIDENT’S DINNER

Neville Isdell was born in Downpatrick County Down on June 8th, 1943. He attended Somerton House (Preparatory School for Belfast High) before leaving Belfast at ten years of age when his family moved to Zambia, which was then northern Rhodesia. His third level education was completed at the University of Cape Town. He joined the Coca-Cola Company in 1966 with the local bottling company in Zambia. After a number of key management assignments in South Africa, Australia, The Philippines and Germany he was named President of the greater Europe Group in 1995.

From 1998 to 2000, he served as Chairman and CEO of Coca Cola Beverages Plc in Great Britain. Then in June 2004, Neville was called out of retirement to lead The Coca- Cola Company as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Building on an incredibly rich and successful history, Neville took the world’s largest beverage company to new heights during his tenure. His efforts resulted in The Coca Cola Company’s return to Fortune’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” list in 2006. In 2009, the company moved up to the 12th spot in the global ranking.

After forty three years in the Coca-Cola organization, Neville retired in April 2009, providing a seamless transition to his successor.

Amongst his many awards and accolades Neville is a recipient of the Clinton Global Citizen Award, he is Chairman of the International Business Leaders Forum and received an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Economics from Queen’s University Belfast.

Neville is a much sought after speaker at events worldwide and we are very fortunate that he has accepted the President’s invitation to be his guest at this year’s dinner. This unique opportunity for Members to hear from a gentleman who has run a company of the size, scale and stature of Coca-Cola, and one who originated from Northern Ireland, where he still has family connections should make for a most interesting evening.
