Following 2011’s sold out, inaugural play, the House, Sports & Social Committee are pleased to announce another evening of live theatre, this year to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic.
The disaster that was the sinking of the Titanic occurred on the night of April 14/15 1912. It was not only the worst maritime accident in history with the loss of over fifteen hundred people but it also heralded the end of an era.
A small group of local people (including one of our members – Dick Mackenzie) has formed a company limited by guarantee to commission (with the support of the Arts Council) a number of new works for a festival of creative arts in the week leading up to the 100th anniversary of the loss of the Titanic.
This Festival seeks to reflect the creative energy that drove the people of Belfast in the first decade of the twentieth century in industrial terms and which now continues to permeate the arts in this small part of the world.
The Festival will comprise a play about emigration in the Lyric Theatre; a specially commissioned song cycle to be performed in the Public Record Office in Titanic Quarter; an art exhibition in the Golden Thread Theatre; a new “Requiem for the lost souls of the Titanic” in St. Anne’s Cathedral by local composer – Philip Hammond; and a one man play to be performed in the Barge beside the Waterfront Hall.
This newly commissioned one-man play will be from the pen of one of the leading Titanic experts, James Wilson Foster, formerly Professor of English in the University of British Columbia, who has in retirement moved back to his native Northern Ireland.
This play will be his first essay on stage and will be based on the last hour of Thomas Andrews, the designer of Titanic and a member of the Ulster Reform Club who was lost in the tragedy. His memorial is on the wall of the third level landing of the Club. The play will be staged by Kabosh the Belfast-based, multi-award winning theatre company.

Ms Barker has been Britain’s leading female sports presenter for the past two decades, having made a seamless transition from top tennis player to the world of broadcasting.
Based in California, her playing career began in 1973 and within three years she had risen to number 3 in the World Rankings, having won the 1976 French Open and, in 1977, she reached the semi-finals of both Wimbledon and, for the second time in two years, the Australian Open. She played her last professional match in 1984 having won 11 singles and 12 doubles titles and joined Channel 7 in Australia in 1985 as a commentator and reporter before moving to British Sky Broadcasting in 1990 and then, in 1993, to the BBC.
Sue has become established as the main presenter for Wimbledon and other major tennis tournaments and has anchored the BBC’s coverage of Summer and Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World and European Athletics Championships and the Grand National and the Derby. Currently the presenter of A Question of Sport on BBC television, Sue has been one of the main presenters for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year for fifteen years.
This will be her second visit to the Club and, given the reception she received eight years ago, book early to avoid disappointment!

Mr Mike Catto, Irelands leading film critic, will examine how the story of the most famous ship ever built has fascinated film makers around the world for almost a century, starting with some of the remaining images from "Saved from the Titanic", made only weeks after the Belfast-built liner sank in the North Atlantic on Sunday April 14th 1912.
Blending rare archival footage of interpretations of the Titanic story from the German film "Nacht und Eis" made in 1912 to James Camerons 1997 Hollywood blockbuster, Mr Catto traces how cinemas insatiable appetite for that fateful night has continued unabated.
There have been many different "takes" on the sinking including the 1919 fictional love story entitled "Atlantis", the incredibly named "Sex", made in 1920 by the silent Ben-Hur director Fred Niblo, which tells the story of flapper girls on board a ship called Gigantic, and the 1929 British-made "Atlantic" which changed the ships name to avoid litigation!
Mr Catto has obtained unique footage of the Nazi Germany version made in 1943, designed as a propaganda coup with steerage passengers portrayed as poor German and Irish victims persecuted by callous British officers under instruction from rich Jewish First Class voyagers, and he has extracts from lesser-known versions like "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" from 1964, "SOS Titanic" of 1980, the 1996 Canadian-made "Titanic" with George C. Scott and a young Catherine Zeta Jones, the French/Italian/Spanish co-production "La Camarera del Titanic", and many more.
Add the best-known interpretations- Jan Negulescos 1953 "Titanic" starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck, Roy Ward Bakers "A NIght to Remember" of 1958 with Kenneth More, and Camerons most recent version due for re-release in 2012- and you are guaranteed a night to remember at the Ulster Reform Club.

Fergus Slattery
Regarded as one of world rugbys greatest back-row forwards, Fergus made his international debut, aged 20, in Irelands drawn game against South Africa in 1970, going on to win 61 Irish caps, 17 as captain, in a career that spanned 14 seasons. A former pupil of Blackrock College, and a graduate of UCD, he captained Ireland to a test series victory in Australia in 1979, the first time that feat had been achieved by any of the Northern Hemisphere countries, and was captain again two years later when Ireland lost both tests in South Africa by narrow margins.
A member of the outstanding Lions squad to New Zealand in 1971, injury prevented him from playing in the test side but three years later in South Africa, he was a key member of the Lions side that won the test series, going through the entire tour unbeaten. Although approached about his availability for subsequent Lions tours, Slattery declined, concentrating on playing for Blackrock, Leinster and Ireland whom he helped to a Triple Crown in 1982 and a Five Nations Championship in 1983. Inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007, he is in great demand as an after-dinner speaker, combining his outstanding anecdotal wit with his skills as a professional auctioneer in supporting major charities in Ireland and beyond.

The Boat Factory
with Dan Gordon and Michael Condron
The Boat Factory (All the Queen’s Men) is a new play written by award-winning local actor and presenter Dan Gordon, and based on his personal experience of growing up around the east Belfast shipyard. This unique and innovative project aims to tell stories which reflect our lives and engender a sense of pride in our shipbuilding heritage, and to perform these stories at the very heart of the community - in schools, clubs, community centres, parochial halls, and prisons – in Belfast and Northern Ireland.
2nd of July 1945: World War II is in its final throes and the Cold War is about to begin; Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly star in ‘Anchors Aweigh’ and in Belfast’s Harland and Wolff Titanic Shipyard, preparations are made for a post-war world. Regarded as the biggest and best there is, there’s a power station, docks, machine shops, engine works and saw mills. If you can dream it – they can build it! Painters, plumbers, riveters, joiners, coppersmiths, fitters, burners, electricians, riggers and shipwrights: there were sixty seven different trades and nearly 200 acres of land; 1700 ships built between here and the Clyde and 35,000 men employed at its height.
This is their story.
As an actor Dan Gordon is probably best known for his portrayal of loveable??? Psychopath – Red Hand Luke in 10 series of the BBC NI television programme Give My Head Peace. In Theatre his performance in the one man show A Night in November by Marie Jones was a major contribution to the Irish stage. He has a long Theatrical career and has garnered many plaudits, awards and nominations along the way, including – TMA – Irish Times – Belfast Telegraph EMA – Glasgow Herald Paper Boat and Broadway Outer Critics Circle Award.
Michael Condron was born in Toronto and now lives in Belfast. Some previous Theatre credits include: John Bull’s Other Island, Santa Claus...What The Reindeer Saw, Much Ado About nothing, Charlotte’s Web, Xmas Eve Can Kill You (all at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast.

Neville Isdell was born in Downpatrick County Down on June 8th, 1943. He attended Somerton House (Preparatory School for Belfast High) before leaving Belfast at ten years of age when his family moved to Zambia, which was then northern Rhodesia. His third level education was completed at the University of Cape Town. He joined the Coca-Cola Company in 1966 with the local bottling company in Zambia. After a number of key management assignments in South Africa, Australia, The Philippines and Germany he was named President of the greater Europe Group in 1995.
From 1998 to 2000, he served as Chairman and CEO of Coca Cola Beverages Plc in Great Britain. Then in June 2004, Neville was called out of retirement to lead The Coca- Cola Company as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Building on an incredibly rich and successful history, Neville took the world’s largest beverage company to new heights during his tenure. His efforts resulted in The Coca Cola Company’s return to Fortune’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” list in 2006. In 2009, the company moved up to the 12th spot in the global ranking.
After forty three years in the Coca-Cola organization, Neville retired in April 2009, providing a seamless transition to his successor.
Amongst his many awards and accolades Neville is a recipient of the Clinton Global Citizen Award, he is Chairman of the International Business Leaders Forum and received an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Economics from Queen’s University Belfast.
Neville is a much sought after speaker at events worldwide and we are very fortunate that he has accepted the President’s invitation to be his guest at this year’s dinner. This unique opportunity for Members to hear from a gentleman who has run a company of the size, scale and stature of Coca-Cola, and one who originated from Northern Ireland, where he still has family connections should make for a most interesting evening.
