Other Information

We are delighted to welcome Dr John O'Driscoll, 136th President of the Irish Rugby Football Union and former Irish international and British and Irish Lion, in conversation with Past President Mr Jim Neilly MBE.

Educated at Stonyhurst College, John O'Driscoll, now a retired consultant dermatologist, played his club rugby with Manchester, Liverpool St Helen's and London Irish whom he captained in the 1980 John Player Cup Final. He played interprovincial rugby for Connacht for 13 seasons and won his first Irish cap against Scotland in 1978.

He had to wait for eighteen months for a second cap which came against Australia in 1979 when Ireland became the first Five (now Six) Nations side to win a test series in the Southern Hemisphere. He subsequently made 25 consecutive appearances as a blind-side flank forward, most of which came alongside Fergus Slattery and Willie Duggan, and he played a major role in Ireland's 1982 Triple Crown success, the first in 33 years.

He toured twice with the British and Irish Lions, playing in three tests against South Africa in 1980 and playing in three more against New Zealand in 1983. Voted Irish Sportsman of the Year in 1980, he is a former Lions selector, past President of the Irish Exiles and, for almost a decade, he represented the IRFU on the boards of World Rugby and Rugby Europe.
