In today’s Talk our fellow Member Bryan Johnston will put into perspective D-Day, and trace the lives and achievements of these five Ulstermen before and during the War illustrating where their paths crossed and their post War legacies. It was after meeting a D-Day veteran in New Zealand in 2014 that Bryan first explored this fascinating and captivating subject.

Bryan was formerly the Chief Executive of the TSB Bank Northern Ireland which became the restyled First Trust Bank. He has also been Chairman of a number of organisations both in the Public and Private Sector and has spoken at International Seminars on Banking and Technology.

Dr Daniel Jewesbury, a Member since 2013, returns to Belfast to lead a tasting of what he believes is the greatest wine in the world, Port.

Daniel is a frequent visitor to Porto and the Douro Valley, the only place in the world where real Port is produced. He is also well known to many port producers and shippers, so he is the ideal man to guide us through the fascinating history and various styles of this versatile yet unique wine.

Guests will taste white ports, wood-aged tawnies, and bottle-matured ‘late-bottled vintage’, before concluding with two examples of that pinnacle of the winemaker’s art, vintage port.

Daniel moved from Belfast to Sweden in 2017, to take up a post as Senior Lecturer in Fine Art in the Valand Academy of the University of Gothenburg. One of the more complex (and ongoing) parts of his move has been the gradual relocation of his port cellar, containing bottles from many decades. During the evening, Daniel will explain why Irish-bottled vintage port is still some of the best available anywhere in the world!

Wild Venison; truly, the cuisine of Kings! On 22nd November, Members and their Guests will have an opportunity to experience this wonderful fare at a pre-Christmas fine dining event which we are organising in association with the NI Branch of the British Deer Society. The BDS-NI is sponsoring the evening by providing the wild venison that Head Chef, Robert Fulton, will use to create the centrepiece main course in a sumptuous game-themed dinner.Following pre-dinner drinks, the BDS-NI will deliver a short talk on the Society’s work and the various species of wild deer to be found locally. Then dinner will be served, banquet style, (one long table) in the Old Billiard Room between two blazing fires. Attendance will be strictly limited to 40, and, as befits an event of this calibre, the dinner will be a Black Tie occasion.

At the Society’s request, a ballot will be run to generate a collection in support of St Anne’s Cathedral Black Santa Appeal.
