Other Information

Educated at Portadown College and Newcastle University where he studied agriculture, Rory Best followed older brother Simon into professional rugby, making his Ulster debut against Munster in 2005 and in November of that year he won his first Ireland cap as a replacement against New Zealand at Lansdowne Road.

Retiring with more than 200 appearances for Ulster, he made 124 appearances for Ireland, 38 as captain, and played in four Six Nations Championship winning sides, including Grand Slam victories in 2009 and 2018, captaining Ireland in the latter.

He was the first Irish player to captain his country to victory over New Zealand and the only one to lead Ireland to wins against New Zealand, South Africa.

In 2017 he was awarded an OBE for services to rugby and an honorary doctorate by Queens University in 2018 the same year he was given the Freedom of the Borough of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.

A veteran of four Rugby World Cups, he toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2013 and 2017, and, since October 2025, has been the General Manager of Ulster Rugby.
