It is with regret that we learned of the death of Gordon Lucy (1956-2026) on 28 September. He gave an excellent talk on ‘The Heyday of Liberal Unionism ‘ in November 2025 at the Club as part of a 3 part series of talks to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the Club. The talk highlighted an often forgotten period known as ‘killing home rule with kindness ‘ when Liberal Unionists were particularly influential in the formulation of Government policy in Ireland, many of whom were not only members of the club but instrumental in its foundation on liberal principles.
Gordon was a regular visit to the club and will be sorely missed in political historical circles. He was a regular contributor to local journalism with his wide ranging knowledge of late 19th and 20th century history
Johnny Andrews and Ben Lowry represented the club at the funeral.
See attached link for the script for the talk, which has so kindly been given to the Club.
