President’s Message

Dear Members,

There is no doubt that tradition lies at the very heart of this Club's DNA. It is tradition that has helped maintain its unique character over the many years, and which is in modern business parlance it’s ‘USP’ - Unique Selling Point. For those sentimentalists among us our traditions are a treasured and sacred thing that carry within them a long golden thread of continuity reaching back to, and connecting us with, the distant past. They define the very character of the Club, they are what make it ‘it’.

But whereas tradition is undoubtedly important there still needs to be the capacity to change where necessary and adapt to new circumstances. That has been the challenge for many of my predecessors - the eternal balancing act. In these increasingly uncertain times with a fast changing economic climate and where cultural and social norms are also shifting significantly it is a balancing act that is possibly more challenging than ever before. To ensure the Ulster Reform Club sits comfortably within the world it now finds itself in whilst also being prepared for what may lie ahead, and all of this whilst maintaining its very unique character, respecting and protecting both its traditions and the legacy of those who came before us. Rooted in tradition but ready for tomorrow.

In order to do this first and foremost we need to ensure the Club remains on a firm financial footing in the years ahead with robust fiscal foundations. To achieve this we are undertaking a comprehensive ‘root and branch’ review of how the Club operates. This process is already well underway and the results are encouraging, but it is very much an ongoing journey. We are making efficiencies wherever possible and whereas this process combined with the increased cost of living we are all experiencing has inevitably necessitated some price increases we are limiting these wherever possible. I would like to thank members for their continued support and understanding as we navigate this transitional period. Once completed we will not only be in a better position to protect and increase our reserves, thereby enhancing our financial resilience, but also reward the loyalty of members with an increased range of ‘added value’ benefits.

I am mindful that the Club's continued success also relies on its being an attractive prospect for potential new members, particularly young professionals, and we must do what we can to encourage their recruitment by removing as many barriers as possible to their entry whilst still maintaining and protecting the Club’s high standards. This will be achieved by an energetic and targeted approach to recruitment to strengthen our membership base. Whilst I am encouraging a much more proactive approach this will be done in concert with our usual carefully managed application process to ensure increased membership numbers are not achieved at the expense of the good character we have come to expect of our fellow members.

I am confident that the future is bright because this Club has proved time and time again that its quiet superpower is its capacity to evolve. Its detractors may argue that institutions such as the Ulster Reform Club are something of an anachronism, more at home in the pages of a Sherlock Holmes novel than a modern and dynamic regional capital, however it's worth noting that with a history that spans 3 centuries, the reigns of 7 monarchs, the upheaval of two world wars, 30 years of conflict here in Northern Ireland and the turmoil of two global pandemics, we're still here. A glorious little piece of Victorian Belfast not simply surviving but thriving here in the heart of our 21st Century city. Why? Because of an innate ability to navigate and adapt to shifting circumstances and remain both relevant and a reassuring constant in an ever changing and often uncertain world.

As the Club's 142nd President, I commit myself to continue this great legacy. To work tirelessly with our wonderful Management Team and all those talented and dedicated members giving their time and energy to serve on our various committees to ensure all our members and their guests have the best possible experience when they walk through those great oak doors on Royal Avenue and into a Club where there is not only a reassuring air of history but a warm welcome, great service, wonderful cuisine and most importantly a proud sense of belonging as part of our great Ulster Reform Club family.
